Definitely a bad hit with an even worse result. Hopefully it's not too bad of an injury.

Looks like an ACL + MCL tear, speaking from experience.

What happens if Edler gets suspended for, say, 4 games and Sweden only plays 2 more this tournament? Does the suspension carry over to any IIHF event (Olympics)?

The only slight positive is that his leg did come right up off the ice. I think there is at least a chance that he ends up with a nasty bruise and the 4-8 week severe sprain.

Usually the worst ones are when the foot is anchored down and then the knee just goes wherever anyway in which case anything/everything can just tear.

Fingers crossed.

The answer to that is 'yes'. Any suspension here will carry over to the Olympics.

I love these tournaments and injuries are rare. I usually cringe when you see non-nhl players who are just muckers and grinders and don't care at all about their opponent or just do not know how to stay safe.... but this was an NHL player on an NHL player so this is all the more rare.

Hope he is OK.

Edler really has no history of intent to injure, in fact,, more Canucks fans would probably agree that they wish he was more aggressive. That being said, this was a poor hit. I don't know what was in his mind.

Didn't he completely run Mike Smith this year? Or was that last?

He does now.

It doesn't get much dirtier than that. Leave it to a Canuck. What a piece of sh!t.

Both plays were accidental, no malicious attempt at all. Run along friend.

The pain Staal was in looked a lot like the pain you see in other guys when they tear there ACL

Yeah Edler was like "Oh, look. Staal's knee is here let me just accidentally hit it with my own knee. I thought trying hit him the shoulder or chest was to dangerous. Accident, I swear."

Typical view from behind a pair of blue, green and white glasses.

Yep it was filthy.

He easily could have taken Staal's center mass and drove him into the ice. He chose to take the knee.

edler's first dirty hit in his career. people in vancouver wish he played like that all the time.

i feel bad for staal as a canadian and hope it's not as bad as it looked. there's zero chance he's on a plane the next day, which is reported, if it's that bad. you couldn't fly with that swelling.

I think what he means by that is that most Canuck fans would like to see a mean streak to his game, he actually does pretty well in the "hits" category but just the little things like stand up for teammates or punish a forward in front of the net.

Obviously no sane hockey fan wants to see any hits like that.

He did, but watching the replay almost makes it seem like he was trying to avoid the contact by sliding along the glass but Smith was backed up all the way to the glass himself. Smith also had the puck and IMO the NHL needs to do something about that rule where goalies are outside of their crease by a few feet and playing the puck, and in Smith's case holding onto the puck for quite a bit of time.

No defending Edler's hit on Staal though, that was dirty and unnecessary, and difficult for me to watch Staal's reaction.

Agreed, was watching the game today and saw it happen live, I even flinched when I saw him lying in pain and I see crazy poop happen for a living. Was a ridiculously dirty play by edler, may have cost Canada the game as you take out the captain like that and then the team finds themselves having to remain composed, with their best forward out of the game.

To comment on the bloggers opinions. Absolutely worth the risk. Probably even more so for an older player as it isn't just experience they are getting, but keeping them competitive and sharper as they age. Real experience against some of the best competition in the world, is always better than just sitting around all summer and "working out". The tourney doesn't last very long anyways and he still gets at least 3 months to rest up over the summer. Hope Karma finds edler some day, as this looks like it could be a bad injury.

First dirty hit in his career? Running the goalie like this wasn't dirty?
